Alexandra Sheyko, 84, of South Bend, passed away Friday, October 23, 2020, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka.

Alexandra was born February 6, 1936 in Russia to the late Peter and Maria (Komcherova) Popov. She left Russia with her family at the age of 10 and they settled in South Bend. On September 1, 1957, Alexandra married Dmitry Sheyko and they lived in Chicago before moving to South Bend in 1970.

Alexandra retired from Miles/Bayer after nearly 20 years of employment. She enjoyed flower gardening, playing cards, sewing and needle work and loved shopping. Her family was the center of her life.

Alexandra deeply loved her family and it showed daily in her actions. To her family, she wasn’t just a good mother, she was a great one! A few of the things that made her special to those who knew her are as follows:

Alexandra was an enthusiastic gardener. She loved to plant, care, and maintain endless varieties of flowers, ornamental trees and bushes. She appreciated the many species of birds that these plantings attracted to her home, especially humming birds. She didn’t just have a green thumb, she had two!

To say the least, Alexandra was also passionate about sewing and crafting. She made countless dresses, blouses, pairs of slacks, curtains, and even reupholstered furniture. She literally purchased yards, upon yards of fabric and craft supplies anticipating many future projects in her retirement years.

Alexandra was definitely known for cooking great meals, both in quality and undoubtedly in quantity. Her kitchen dining room will always be known as the “hot spot” for all family gatherings. Her words “can I get you anything”, were always followed by her filling the table with food. Anything from chips, to sweets, to meats. This will be embedded in the memories of her children, her grandchildren and anyone that visited her home.

There is so much more about Alexandra that can be said, unfortunately space limits this. In short, she was beyond generous, humble, empathetic, supportive, strong, an exceptional listener, and above all unbelievably loving.  She will be greatly missed and always in our hearts.

Alexandra’s surviving family includes her four children, Michael (Judy) Sheyko of Mishawaka, Tania (Steven) O’Dell of Osceola, Alexander Sheyko of North Liberty, Iowa, and Peter (Mary Jane) Sheyko of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Johnathon, Benjamin, Mason, Kelsie, Jordan, Tessa, Adam, Natasha, Matthew, Jacob, Katherine, Kristin and Julia; and 14 great grandchildren, Elijah, Ezekiel, Edison, Emersynn, Bronson, Kennedi, Dempsey, Addison, Finnegan, Sullivan, Owen, Isaac, Grace and Joy.

Alexandra was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Dimitry; and by her sister, Helen Hite.

Private family services will be held in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka.
