Catherine “Kate” Marie McCoy-Shafer, 91, of Mishawaka, passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2012, in Sterling House, South Bend.

Kate was born April 13, 1921 in South Bend, the daughter of the late Cletus and Cleytie (Farrington) Michels. Her family lived in Edwardsburg and they moved to Mishawaka when Kate was a teenager. She graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1939.

Kate married A.C. “Mac” McCoy on July 12, 1941. They made Mishawaka their home. Kate assisted with the day to day operation of the family businesses; M & M Market and Mac’s Market both in Mishawaka. She later worked at South Bend Plastics. Kate played an important part in assisting Mac with his insurance business.

Mac passed away in 1985. Kate married Daniel Shafer on November 17, 1989. They divided their time between Mishawaka and Naples, Florida. Dan passed away in 2001.

Kate was a long time member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Mishawaka. She belonged to the Mishawaka Alumni Association. Kate enjoyed genealogy, astrology and time spent in Florida.

Kate’s surviving family includes two sons, Timothy (Jackie) McCoy of South Bend and Martin (Pamela) McCoy of Ashland, Kentucky; eight grandchildren, Mark McCoy, Monica McCoy, Zachary McCoy, Michelle Miller, Patrick McCoy, Meredith McCoy, Traci McCoy and Melissa Goodwin; and eighteen great grandchildren.

Besides her husbands, Mac and Dan; Kate was also preceded in death by a son, Michael McCoy; a granddaughter, Marie Angelle McCoy; and a brother, Cletus “Bill” McCoy.

Kate’s family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Sterling House for the excellent care she received during the last year of her life.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, November 3, at 11 am in St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 W. Mishawaka Ave, Mishawaka, with Monsignor Bruce Piechocki officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Mishawaka.

Friends may spend time with Kate’s family Friday from 4 - 6 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, and Saturday from 10 - 11 am in the church.

Contributions in Kate’s memory are suggested to the Center of Hospice Care. Assistance with memorials is available through the funeral home.
