Daniel J. Hassan, Sr., 89, of South Bend, passed away Tuesday evening, May 6, 2014, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka, following a brief illness.
Dan was born June 28, 1924 in South Bend, a son of the late Alick and Mabel (Witherell) Hassan. He spent his entire life in South Bend.
Dan married Alice L. DeMaegd on September 14, 1943. She preceded him in death on December 8, 2007. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Hassan; and a son-in-law, Robert Thielka.
Dan’s surviving family includes a daughter, Jean Thielka of Avon, Indiana; a son, Daniel (Diana) Hassan, Jr., of South Bend; a sister, Alyce Jane Clark; four grandchildren, William (Karin) Crum, Mary Catherine (Jameral) Thomas, Daniel (Jennifer) Hassan III and Rebecca (Jerome) Torzewski; and ten great grandchildren.
Dan was a World War II veteran, serving in three major battles and earning three bronze stars.
Dan retired from Ball Band (Uniroyal) in Mishawaka after 38 years of employment. He attended the Christian Center Church in South Bend. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and particularly loved going out to eat.
Private services were held Saturday, May 10, in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, Mishawaka, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka.
