Donald Matthew Greene, born June 12, 1914 in Bicknell, Indiana to the late William and Irene (Patterson) Greene, died Wednesday, December 31, 2014, in the Sanctuary at St. Paul’s in South Bend.
As a young man, Don served with the Civilian Conservation Corps throughout Indiana. On July 7, 1934 he married Elsie Beebe. They resided in Indianapolis where he was employed with Curtis Wright and later as a sales representative for the Trailmobile Corporation. He later took up residency in Mishawaka while still employed by Trailmobile and later at I&E Inc. from which he retired.
In Indianapolis on June 14, 1958 he married Catherine “Kate†(Puntarelli) Barrett, who preceded him in death on October 13, 2007. Don and Kate lived in Mishawaka until moving to Sebring, Florida in 1990.
Don is survived by six children, Betty Forster Niedbalski (Bill) of South Bend, Jean Chrzanowski of Columbia City, Donald L. Greene (Denise) of Peoria, Arizona, David Barrett (Mary) of Matthews, North Carolina, Tony Barrett of South Bend and Dick Barrett (Patti) of Granger; 16 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Don was also preceded in death by six brothers, three sisters, two grandsons and one granddaughter.
Among the many things Don loved were golf and his talent for art. Over the years, he painted many oils as well as charcoal, pen and pencil drawings for relatives and friends. He had memberships with the Hampshire Golf Club in Michigan and the Sebring Country Club in Sebring, Florida. While living in Indiana he golfed at many courses in the area.
Don was a member and past president of Northern Indiana Motor Carrier Association in South Bend and was a life member of the South Bend Lions Club.
Don and Kate attended St. Monica Catholic Church in Mishawaka and Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Avon Park, Florida.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am Tuesday, January 6, in St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 W. Mishawaka Ave., Mishawaka, with Monsignor Bruce Piechocki officiating. Entombment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.
Visitation will be from 3 - 7 pm Monday in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, and from 9:30 - 10:30 am Tuesday in church.
Memorials are suggested for Masses or to the charity of one’s choice.
