Evelyn L. Friedman, 96, of Mishawaka, passed away Thursday afternoon, March 20, 2014, in Healthwin Specialized Care, South Bend.
Evelyn was born May 18, 1917 in Miamisburg, Ohio, the daughter of the late George T. and Bertha F. (Isenbarger) Lowry. She lived in Toledo, Ohio, until moving with her family to Mishawaka in 1930. She graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1935.
On May 30, 1940, Evelyn married Louis Joseph Friedman. The couple made Mishawaka their home.
Evelyn was employed as the secretary to the Dean of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame from 1957 – 1982. For many years she wrote a column for the Mishawaka Enterprise. She was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Mishawaka, the Audubon Society and the Normain Heights Homemakers. Evelyn volunteered for Special Olympics, enjoyed traveling and was an avid Scrabble player. She won blue ribbons at the State Fair for her photography.
Evelyn’s surviving family includes five children, Susan (Greg) Grace of Key West, Florida, Laurel (Eliud) Villanueva of Mishawaka, Catherine (Robert) VanDenDriessche of South Bend, Candace (Greg) Bovee of Great Falls, Virginia and Christopher Friedman of Boulder, Colorado; fourteen grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; a son, Matthew; and her brother, George Lowry.
Services honoring Evelyn’s life will be held Friday, March 28, at 10 am in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, with Monsignor Bruce Piechocki officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
Friends may spend time with Evelyn’s family Friday from 9 – 10 am in the funeral home.
