Fred J. Hillebrand

Fredric J. Hillebrand, 80, of Mishawaka, passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

Fred was born October 16, 1941 in Mishawaka, a son of the late Herbert and Clara (Hornung) Hillebrand. He was a 1959 graduate of St. Joseph Catholic High School in South Bend. Fred served his country for four years in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman Petty Officer and with the US Marine Corps as a Field Medical Service Technician (EMT). He received an honorable discharge in October of 1963.

On May 2, 1964, Fred married Patricia Ann Harlozinski. They were introduced by his sister while he was home on a 30-day annual furlough from the Navy. The couple lived in South Bend and later moved to Osceola. Fred and Pat lived in Florida for several years before returning to the area, settling in Mishawaka in 1998.

Pat preceded him in death on September 9, 2015 after 51 years of marriage. He was also preceded by two brothers, Paul and James Hillebrand; and a sister, Carolyn Kowalski.

Fred is survived by two daughters, Montana Autumn Spencer and Laura (Greg) Markwood; a sister, Kathryn (Jaime) Dolojan; and two brothers, Michael Hillebrand and Herbert Hillebrand; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Over the years, Fred was employed in the chemical and coating industry. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He also belonged to The Christ Child Society and American Legion Post #161. He enjoyed oil painting and traveling.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Wednesday, July 6, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 225 S. Mill Street, Mishawaka, with Rev. Christopher Lapp officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend.

Visitation is from 4 – 7 pm on Tuesday, July 5, in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, where the Rosary will be prayed at 7 pm.
