George C. Brandt, 85, of Mishawaka, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.
George was born May 17, 1930 in South Bend, a son of the late Lavern and Ethel (Zolman) Brandt. He grew up in Mishawaka and was raised by his grandparents, the Zolman’s. He was a 1949 graduate of Mishawaka High School.
George married Lynn D. Miner on September 28, 1951 at East United Methodist Church in Mishawaka. He then served his country in the US Army from 1951 - 1953 during the Korean War.
George was a lifelong resident of Mishawaka. He and Lynn wintered in North Fort Myers, Florida but he always looked forward to returning home to Mishawaka.
George was employed for 36 years at Wheelabrator-Frye Corporation and then spent 9 years in maintenance at the Battell Center. He was a member of East United Methodist Church. For many years, George and Lynn delivered for Meals on Wheels. George loved children and was especially fond of his grandchildren and spent countless hours at their activities including ball games, swim meets and school functions. He enjoyed IU Basketball and spent endless hours playing cards. He was known in the area for his hobby of collecting aluminum cans.
George’s surviving family includes his wife of over 64 years, Lynn; two children, Daniel John (Cathy) Brandt of Mishawaka and Barbara Lyn (Kevin) Patton of Advance, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Jaden, Joshua, Daniel, Connor, Cody, Jenna and Cameron; and nineteen great grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Michael Brandt in 1973; his brother, Robert Brandt; and two sisters-in-law, Sharon Dodson and Marjorie Town.
Services honoring George’s life will be held Monday, May 9, at 11:30 am in East United Methodist Church, 1621 East 3rd Street, Mishawaka, with Pastor Scott Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
Friends may spend time with George’s family Sunday, May 8, from 4 - 7 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, and Monday from 10:30 - 11:30 am in church.
