Harriet Loughlin, 95, of Mishawaka, passed away early Friday morning, July 11, 2014, in Michiana Health & Rehabilitation with her family by her side.

Harriet was born March 9, 1919 in South Bend, a daughter of the late Bronislav and Emelia Szaulewicz. She grew up in South Bend where she attended St. Adalbert Catholic School and graduated from South Bend Central Senior High School in 1937. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Marquette University in 1941. At Marquette she sang in the University Chorus and was a member of the Conrad Club, a polish social and cultural group.

Harriet married Thomas Loughlin on December 18, 1943 in Wilmington, North Carolina while he was in the service. The couple lived in Mishawaka where Tom was an attorney. For many years they wintered in Jensen Beach, Florida. Prior to marriage, Harriet was employed as a social worker with the St. Joseph County Department of Public Welfare.

Harriet was an active member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Mishawaka and belonged to their mothers club. She volunteered for St. Monica School and Meals on Wheels. Harriet was a den mother for Cub Scouts and an assistant leader for Campfire Girls. She was an active member of the Mishawaka League of Republican Women. Harriet was bilingual in Polish and English and studied Latin, French and Russian. She enjoyed flower gardening and watching Lawrence Welk. In recent years she avidly watched the news, keeping up on local, state and national news and weather.

Most of all, Harriet was dedicated to her family. They were the center of her life. Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, Thomas Loughlin (Josephine) of San Jose, California and Michael Loughlin (Deise Cardenas) of Ada, Ohio; three daughters, Pat Loughlin-Reed (Richard) of Washington, D.C., Bridget Tranter (Gary) of Mishawaka and Sue Loughlin (Jay Mitchell) of Terre Haute; a sister, Victoria Heintzberger; six grandchildren, Patrick and Kelly Loughlin, Brian and Jon Tranter, Natalie Mitchell and Vanna Jo Loughlin; and six great grandchildren.

Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, in 2006; and also by her brother, Dr. Edward Shelley.

The family wishes to thank Harriet’s daughter-in-law, Deise, for the great care she has given her over the past year and to daughter, Bridget, for the many years of loving care to Harriet and Tom.
