Helen L. Diltz, 98, of South Bend, passed away on Saturday, April 17, 2021, at Raclin Hospice House, Mishawaka.
Helen was born July 25, 1922, in Hessen Cassel, Indiana, to the late Andrew and Marie (Wyss) Muldoon. She grew up in Mishawaka, was graduated from St. Joseph Academy in South Bend and attended Saint Mary’s College.
Helen married Richard “Dick” C. Diltz on April 10, 1944, in St. Monica Catholic Church, Mishawaka. They lived in Mishawaka until moving to South Bend in 1968.
Before starting a family, Helen was employed at Dodge Manufacturing. She then became a full-time homemaker. She was a member of the Cathedral of St. Matthew in South Bend and an active member of the Christ Child Society. She enjoyed knitting and making craft items, tending her flowers and traveling around the world. An avid Bridge player, Helen played five times a week at the Sanctuary at St. Paul’s before the pandemic.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Dick, in 2007; by two sisters, Mary Alice Shafer and Louise Rosenhamer; and a brother, Paul Muldoon.
Helen is survived by her seven children, Sister Joyce Diltz, PHJC, Jean Gale, John (Michele) Diltz, Robert (Linda) Diltz, Warren (Kathleen) Diltz, Marian (Brian) McCarthy and Barbara (Mark) Kobasuk; brother-in-law, Joseph Shafer; sister-in-law Carol Bauer; eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, at the Cathedral of St. Matthew, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend, with Rev. Terry Fisher officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the cathedral. Private family burial will take place Monday in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
The family requests that face masks and social distancing be observed at the cathedral.
