Irene A. Kessler, 96, of Niles, passed away Wednesday evening, January 15, 2014, at her son’s home in Mishawaka where she had resided in recent years.
Irene was born September 16, 1917 in Indiana Harbor, Indiana, a daughter of the late George and Mary (Fedak) Pihulic. She grew up in Bridgman, Michigan, and was a graduate of Bridgman High School.
On September 20, 1947 in New Buffalo, she married Kenneth Kessler. They lived in Galien until 1958 when they moved to Arizona. They returned to the area in 1979 settling in Niles.
Irene attended St. Monica Catholic Church in Mishawka. She was a homemaker. Irene enjoyed playing bingo, shopping, going out to eat, listening to music and traveling to Florida.
Irene’s surviving family includes two sons, Kenneth Kessler of Mishawaka and James Kessler of Shang Hai, China; and a granddaughter, Hope Kessler
Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; a brother, Emil Pihulic; and five sisters, Mary Gast, Suzanne Brado, Amy Denno, Pauline Hatfield and Lorrayne Meisenbach.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 am Thursday, January 23, in St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 W. Mishawaka Ave., with Monsignor Bruce Piechocki officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery, Bridgman.
Friends may spend time with Irene’s family 6 - 8 pm Wednesday, January 22, in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka and 9:30 - 10: 30 am Thursday in church.
