James “Jim” A. DeWinter, 72, of Mishawaka, passed away Friday, January 8, 2021, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

Jim was born May 25, 1948 in Mishawaka, to the late Eugene and Helen (Boker) DeWinter. He was a 1966 graduate of Mishawaka High School and later earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Indiana State College. From 1970 – 1972 he served his country in the US Army.

Jim married Jane F. Augustine on August 1, 1980. The couple made Mishawaka their home.

For nearly 40 years, Jim was an accountant with the Indiana State Board of Accounts. He was a life-long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka where he served on the finance committee, was a eucharistic minister, collection counter and a member of the parish garden club. Over the years, Jim was active at St. Joseph Grade School and was the long-time secretary/treasurer for the Mishawaka Catholic Athletic Association. He coached many sports activities that his children were involved with. Jim loved bowling and was inducted into the St. Joseph Valley Bowling Hall of Fame and served on their board of directors. Jim enjoyed golfing, traveling and vegetable gardening. He loved cooking and was known for sharing his Hungarian dishes. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He faithfully attended his grandchildren’s many activities.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Jane; four children, Michael (Bonnie) Atkinson, Christopher (Rhonda) Atkinson, Jeremy (Ali) DeWinter and Jenna (Derek) Brannock; a brother, Ron (Betty) DeWinter; a sister, Barbara (Roger) Spitaels; thirteen grandchildren; one great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews he loved dearly.

Jim was preceded in death by a brother, Bob (Judy) DeWinter.

Visitation will be from 3 – 7 pm Tuesday, January 12, in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am Wednesday in the Cathedral of St. Matthew, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend, with Rev. Christopher Lapp officiating. Cremation will follow with burial at a later date.

Face coverings are required at the funeral home and church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Mishawaka Catholic Schools.
