James R. Meier, Sr., 78, of Mishawaka, passed away peacefully with his family present on Wednesday afternoon, October 4, 2017, in his home.

“Jim” was born January 11, 1939 in Indianapolis, Indiana, a son of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Hovelsen) Meier. He grew up in the Indianapolis area and was a graduate of Scecina Memorial High School. He earned a B.S. in Engineering Degree from Purdue University.

On May 8, 1965, Jim married Christine M. Svetanoff. They moved to Mishawaka in 1975.

Jim was a Civil, Sanitary and Environmental Engineer for various firms and utilities and at one time was the Director of Mishawaka Utilities. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Mishawaka, Mishawaka Kiwanis Club and the Elks in Hobart, Indiana. He also belonged to the Indiana Water Pollution Control Association. Jim enjoyed cars and was a member of the Corvair Club. He was an avid fisherman and liked woodworking and playing Solitaire. He enjoyed caring for his lawn but his family lovingly feels “he was really quite bad at it.”

Jim’s surviving family includes eight children, James (Tracy) Meier, Jr., Cami (Bill) Whitten, Carrie Lynn Bennett, Cherie Meier, Christy Meier, Joseph (Billie) Meier, Jon Michael (Heidi) Meier and Lilia Barriga; a brother, Dr. John (Aileen) Meier; a sister-in-law, Patricia Meier; 16 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law as well as nieces and nephews who he was close to.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Christine in 1999; a daughter, Celeste Meier; and a brother, William F. Meier.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Monday, October 9, in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 4508 Vistula Road, Mishawaka, with Rev. John Eze officiating. Cremation will follow with burial at a later date.

Friends may spend time with Jim’s family from 2 – 5 pm on Sunday, October 8, in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, where the Rosary will be prayed at 5 pm.

Visitation is also 9:30 – 10:30 am Monday in church.
