Jay William Chase, 59, of Mishawaka, passed away Monday, June 25, 2012, at home following a long illness.

Jay was born July 24, 1952 in Mishawaka, a son of the late James and Veronica (Carlson) Chase. He grew up in Mishawaka and was a 1970 graduate of Penn High School. Jay earned an Associates Degree from Purdue University. He served his country in the US Navy from 1975 -1979.

Jay married the former Ida Dobosiewicz on November 12, 1988 in St. Joseph Church, Mishawaka. The couple made Mishawaka their home.

Jay was a Draftsman working for several area companies. He was employed in Quality Control at AM General when he first became ill.

Jay was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was very active with Boy Scouts and served as a Leader of Troop 105. Jay enjoyed fishing. He could make or fix anything and always had a project going on around the house.

Most of all Jay’s family was the center of his life. Those he leaves behind include his wife, Ida; two sons, Jeremy (fiancé Caitlyn) Chase of South Bend and Bryan (Dawn) Belting of Mishawaka; a daughter, Missy (Mike) Klaer of Mishawaka; five grandchildren, Abby and Michael Belting, Payton and Sydney Klaer, and Jayden Chase; four sisters, Mary Catherine (Norris) Todd, Gloria (Steve) Paspek, June Simons and Joyce (John) Tarbox; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Jay was also preceded in death by his brother, Richard Chase in 1990, who was killed while serving in the US Air Force during Desert Shield.

Friends may spend time with Jay’s family Friday from 4 - 8 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, where the Rosary will be prayed at 6 pm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 am in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 225 S. Mill Street, Mishawaka, with Rev. Terry Fisher officiating. After the Mass, military honors will be provided by VFW 360 / American Legion 161 Burial Squad. Cremation will follow.

Jay’s family suggests memorial contributions be given to Boy Scout Troop 105 or Vanderbilt University Autonomic System Research Center or Rock Steady Boxing (a therapy program for those with Parkinson’s and Parkinson’s like illnesses). Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home.
