Jerry V. Black, 78, of South Bend, passed away at home on Wednesday, June 30, 2021.
Jerry was born May 25, 1943 in Clinton, Indiana, to the late Howard V. and Viola Lee (Morris) Black. He grew up in South Bend. He served his country from 1966 – 1968 in the US Army during the Vietnam War.
Jerry married Sherry A. Kardel on January 26, 1963. For most of their married life they lived in South Bend.
Jerry was a Sheet Metal Journeyman, working many years for Troeger Sheet Metal. At one time he worked at Bendix. In later years he worked in custodial service at University of Notre Dame. He was a long-time member of the VFW and American Legion. Jerry also belonged to the Clay Democratic Club. He loved fishing and was an avid fan of Cubs Baseball and Notre Dame sports, especially football.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sherry; two children, Brian Black and Christine Black; three grandchildren, Makayla Black, Anthony Harris and Envy Clay; and a brother, Michael Black.
Jerry was preceded in death by a sister, Sharon Irons.
Services will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, July 7, in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, with Pastor Bob Vale officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery with military honors by VFW 360/American Legion 161 Burial Squad.
Visitation will be from 11 am – 1 pm on Wednesday in the funeral home.
