Joan M. Hoerstman, 78, of Mishawaka, passed away early Tuesday morning, June 28, 2011, in Golden Living Center, Mishawaka, following a long illness.
Joan was born December 24, 1932 in Mishawaka, a daughter of the late Joseph and Rachel Marie (Maenhout) VanDriessche. She spent most of her life in Mishawaka and was a graduate of St. Joseph Academy in South Bend.
Joan married Al J. Hoerstman on May 1, 1954 in St. Bavo Church, Mishawaka.
Before marriage, Joan worked at the Studebaker Corporation. After starting a family she was a homemaker. When her children were older she worked several years at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in South Bend. She later was employed 17 years at the University of Notre Dame where she was a technical typist for math professors.
Joan was a member of St. Bavo Catholic Church in Mishawaka. She was a homebody who enjoyed cooking, baking, knitting, crocheting, flower and vegetable gardening. She also liked fishing with her husband.
Joan’s surviving family includes her husband of 57 years, Al; seven children, Ann Marie Doyle of Elkhart, Mark (Angela) Hoerstman of Lakeville, Mary Guyer of California, Rita Louise (Matt) Weiss of Walkerton, Linda Jean (Ted) Szalewski of Mishawaka, Karen Lee (David) Zigon of Warsaw and James Hoerstman of South Bend; three sisters, Dolores (Donald) Newcomer of Osceola, Evelyn (Harold) McCartney of Nevada and Sylvia (Nate) VanDuysse of Mishawaka; fifteen grandchildren, Kristin, Amber, Ben, Neil, Layne, Garrett, Leslie, Stephen, Ross, Hunter, Trevor, Taylor, David, Allison and Ashlyn; and one great grandchild, Elizabeth.
Friends spent time with Joan’s family on Thursday, June 30, 2011, from 2 - 4 pm and 6 - 8 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, where a prayer service was held at 7:30 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, July 1, at 11 am in St. Bavo Catholic Church, 502 W. 7th Street, Mishawaka, with Rev. Barry England officiating. Cremation followed with burial in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Mishawaka.
