Joseph A. “Joe†Richard, 71, of Mishawaka, passed away Wednesday morning, July 11, 2012.
Joe was born July 31, 1940 in Mishawaka, the son of the late Regis and Mary (Jacobs) Richard. He graduated from St. Joseph Grade School and from Mishawaka High School in 1958. Joe earned his Bachelor’s Degree in 1962 from St. Joseph College in Rensselaer, Indiana. He has served in the US Army Reserves.
Joe was President of Schindler-Richard Insurance Agency in Mishawaka. He has been with the agency since graduating from college in 1962.
Joe was a life-long member and served as an usher at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1878 and served two terms as Grand Knight. At one time he was Mishawaka 5th District Councilman and was City Controller for several years. He was a member of the Bettor’s Club. Joe’s agency proudly supported Mishawaka East End Little League. He loved sports and was avid Chicago White Sox and Bears fan as well as a Notre Dame fan. Joe enjoyed golfing and was known for taking exceptional care of his lawn. He loved life and was always up for having a great time. Joe was a fixture in Mishawaka and his generosity, kindness and smile will truly be missed by all those that knew him.
Joe’s family was the center of his life. Those he leaves behind include his three sons, Michael, John and Tim and their mother, Phyllis Richard; his sister, Pat VanRie; his companion for over 20 years, Sharon Coppens; nieces, cousins and many friends.
Joe’s family will receive friends Monday from 2 - 8 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. Third Street, Mishawaka, where the Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 am in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 225 S. Mill Street, Mishawaka, with Rev. Terry Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
Joe’s family suggests memorial contributions be given to St. Joseph Catholic Church. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home.
