Louis J. Kalil, 94, a life-long Mishawaka resident, passed away Wednesday evening, February 8, 2017, in Sanctuary at St. Paul’s, South Bend.
Louis was born March 18, 1922 in Mishawaka, a son of the late Samuel and Lillian (Nicholas) Kalil. He was a 1941 graduate of Mishawaka High School. Louis served his country in the US Army during World War II. Included among the medals he earned for courageous service were the EAME Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, Purple Heart, Victory Ribbon World War II, Good Conduct Medal and American Theatre Ribbon.
Louis was employed for 34 years at the Bendix Corporation. He was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Mishawaka where he was a 54 year member of the Usher’s Club. Louis also belonged to a Euchre club and enjoyed vegetable gardening. He golfed and bowled on leagues with Bendix.
Louis married Genevieve C. Gapinski on June 21, 1952 in Peru, Illinois. She preceded him in death on August 11, 2015 after 63 years of marriage. Louis was also preceded in death by five sisters, Ruth Marie Kalil, Mary Mansour, Verna Jean David, Sister Rose Marie Kalil, PHJC, and Ann Seward; a brother, Philip Kalil; and an infant brother, John Kalil.
Louis’ surviving family includes a son, Gregory Kalil; a granddaughter, Stephanie Kalil; a brother, John (Dolores) Kalil; and a sister, Agnes Fry.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, February 11, at 10:30 am in St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 W. Mishawaka Ave., Mishawaka, with Rev. Jacob Meyer officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by American Legion 161/VFW 360 Burial Squad.
Friends may spend time with Louis’ family Friday, February 10, from 4 – 7 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, where the Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 pm. Visitation is also Saturday from 9:30 - 10:30 am in the church.
