Marguerite “Monnie†M. Stein, 92, of Mishawaka, passed away peacefully, Wednesday afternoon, November 16, 2016, in her home.
Monnie was born August 8, 1924 in Mishawaka, the daughter of the late Francis and Marguerite (Brehmer) Schnellbach. She grew up in Mishawaka and was a 1942 graduate of Mishawaka High School.
Monnie married Roman “Romy†C. Stein on November 27, 1948 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka. The couple made Mishawaka their home.
In her early years, Monnie worked with her mother in their family business, Marguerite’s Formal Shop. She also worked at Ball Band. Monnie then was a homemaker, raising a large family. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and their Rosary Society and was a collection counter. She taught sewing at St. Joseph Grade School. At one time, Monnie was President of the Penn South Fire Department Auxiliary. She was active in St. Joseph County 4-H where she was a 4-H leader and coordinator for Penn/Harris/Madison Girls 4-H Club. Monnie and her husband drove 4-H projects to the Indiana State Fair for several years. She also belonged to the Purdue Homemakers Extension Club, Triple-R-Riding Club and Christ Child Society.
Monnie was very devoted to her family. Those surviving include seven children, Mary Ann Stein of Mishawaka, Nancy (Tom) Stump of North Liberty, Richard (Diana) Stein of Mishawaka, Kathleen (Michael) Maes of Mishawaka, Marguerite “Mickey†(Steven) Bennett of North Liberty, Kurt (Christine) Stein of Goshen and Jacqueline Stein of Osceola; sixteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Monnie was preceded in death by her husband, Roman; a son, Kenneth Stein; her brother, Bernard Schnellbach; and an infant sister, Mary Kathryn Schnellbach.
Friends may spend time with Monnie’s family from 3 - 7 pm Monday, November 21, and from 11:00 - 11:40 am Tuesday in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, where the Rosary will be prayed at 5 pm Monday.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon Tuesday, November 22, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, corner of West 3rd Street and Mill Street, Mishawaka, with Rev. Christopher Lapp officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Mishawaka.
Contributions in Monnie’s memory may be given to Center for Hospice Care or Mishawaka Catholic School or St. Joseph County 4-H Scholarship Trust. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home.
