Mary Rose Catanzarite, 79, of Mishawaka passed away early Friday morning, January 17, 2014, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

Mary was born September 14, 1934 in Mishawaka, a daughter of the late Frank and Rose (Fotia) Zappia. She grew up in Mishawaka and was a graduate of Mishawaka High School.

Mary married Joseph Catanzarite on June 19, 1954 in St. Monica Catholic Church, Mishawaka. The couple made Mishawaka their home.

Mary was a member of St. Bavo Catholic Church and formerly belonged to St. Monica Church. Her entire life was about her faith and her family. Mary loved to cook and bake. She loved feeding her family as well as many friends of her children and grandchildren. There is a sign in Mary’s kitchen that reads “Nana’s Kitchen - Kids Eat Free”. She has fed many sports teams from Marian High School over the years and is known as “Nana” to many. Mary also enjoyed crocheting.

Mary’s surviving family includes her husband of nearly 60 years, Joe; three sons, Tony (Dolores) Catanzarite of South Bend, Frank (Jill) Catanzarite of Sidney, Ohio and Pat (Nancy) Catanzarite of South Bend; ten grandchildren, Christina (Christopher) Lovely, Joe (Katie) Catanzarite, George (Holly DeNeve) Catanzarite, Jim Catanzarite, Kaitlyn Catanzarite, Rocco Catanzarite, Mary (Josh) Martin, Anna Catanzarite, Nick Catanzarite and Patrick “Dugan” Catanzarite, Jr.; three great grandchildren, Cecilia Catanzarite, Rocco Catanzarite and Ellie Lovely; a sister, Pam (Sherman) Deal; and five brothers, Dominic Zappia, Tony Zappia, Joe Zappia, Rocco (Sara) Zappia and Frank (Thelma) Zappia, Jr.

Mary was preceded in death by two great grandsons, Roger and Guy Martin; a sister, Marge Saldana; a brother, Pat Zappia; and an infant brother, Antonio.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 am Monday in St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 W. Mishawaka, Ave., Mishawaka, with Rev. Andrew Budzinski and Monsignor Bruce Piechocki officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka.

Friends may spend time with Mary’s family today (Sunday) from 2 - 7 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, and Monday from 10 - 11 am in the church.

Contributions in Mary’s memory should be made to Marian High School Student Union Capital Project. Assistance with memorials is available through the funeral home.
