Mary “Jane” Gerbasich, 89, of South Bend, passed away Thursday evening, August 10, 2017, in Hospice House, South Bend.

Jane was born May 5, 1928 in South Bend, a daughter of the late Paul and Mary (Nemeth) Gerbasich. She was a 1947 graduate of Washington High School. She spent her entire life in South Bend.

Jane was employed for 38 years in the St. Joseph County Treasurer’s Office and at the time of her retirement was head cashier. For many years she worked part-time in the Book Store at the University of Notre Dame.

Jane attended Little Flower Catholic Church and for 58 years was a member of Our Lady of Hungary Church. She enjoyed cooking, baking and playing Tripoly. Jane bowled on leagues for many years. She was an avid Notre Dame fan. Jane liked going to the casino and taking bus trips to Chicago to see shows. She once traveled to her home country of Hungary as well as Austria.

Jane’s surviving family includes nephews and nieces, Greg Cegielski, Terry Cegielski, Paul Gerbasich, Mark Gerbasich, Amy Bognar, Dale Gerbasich, Rick Gerbasich and Vickie Zakowski.

Jane was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Paul and Victor Gerbasich; a sister, Viola “Peg” Cegielski; and a niece, Karen Cegielski.

Jane’s family will receive friends at a memorial visitation on Wednesday, August 16, from 5 – 7 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka. Graveside services will be held Thursday, August 17, at 10 am in Highland Cemetery, South Bend.

Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society of St. Joseph County.
