Michael J. Dewinter

Michael Joseph DeWinter, age 72 of Mishawaka, passed away peacefully with his wife Anne by his side in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center on Monday, November 20, 2023. Born June 21, 1951, in Mishawaka to the late August and Marguerite (Brown) DeWinter, he had a life characterized by dedication to family, his love for music, and a strong faith. A lifelong resident of the area, Mike graduated from Marian High School and later attended IU South Bend.  While working at Goldblatt’s department store, he met Anne Widelski and they began dating.  Their love blossomed and they were married on March 9, 1973, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka.

Michael is survived by his wife of 50 years, Anne DeWinter of Mishawaka and their son Aaron (Merri Ellen) DeWinter of Tampa, Florida.  Surviving as well are his grandchildren Maddie (Jacob) Goncalves, Griffin DeWinter, Britt (Nikki) Erp, Hayley (Jeremy) Tillman, Gabe (Kamrie) Helmus, along with six great grandchildren, Aria and Jupiter Tillman, Lilly, Saint and Vianna Helmus, and Leilani Goncalves. He was preceded in death by his brother Terry DeWinter and his sister-in-law, Kay DeWinter.

Services for Mike will be private.  Wells and Cruz Family Funeral Home (formerly Goethals and Wells) has been entrusted with his care.

Mike found his professional calling in the parts department of Krizman Inc. in Mishawaka, where he worked for many years, but his true passion was his love for music. His talent was evident in his performances with the Jack Norris Combo and the Britches Band, where he played the piano and keyboard. His musical contributions to the Michiana area were well-known and well-respected. When age made it difficult for him to play the piano, he taught himself to play the bass guitar and the harmonica. His love for music also extended to his personal life, where he enjoyed arranging music and creating unique mixes of music for his family and friends to enjoy.

Michael loved spending time outdoors, often going boating and spending time with his family on Lake Tippecanoe. He rented a cabin each summer for his family, creating lasting memories and appreciating the beauty of the lake. In his later years, he took up bird watching, with a particular fondness for the hummingbirds that gathered at his feeders. His faith was an integral part of his life. He and Anne were faithful attendees of the Church of God in Tampa, Florida, where he worshipped when visiting his son, Aaron and watched services online while home in Indiana.

Mike will be remembered as a man who lived his life with purpose and passion. He touched many lives with his music, his love for nature, and his unwavering faith. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his journey.
