Michael D. Thornton, Sr.

Michael D. Thornton, Sr., 72, of Mishawaka, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, March 23, 2021.

Mike was born September 27, 1948 in South Bend, a son of the late Gerald and Betty (Steeley) Thornton. He grew up in Mishawaka and was a graduate of Mishawaka High School. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps.

On November 4, 1967, Mike married LeeAnn Brady. The couple made Mishawaka their home.

Mike was employed for over 30 years with Mishawaka Utilities. He was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church, IBEW Local 1392, and was a 52-year member of American Legion Post 161. Mike enjoyed going to the casino, coin collecting, bowling, darts and traveling. He was faithful in attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

Mike was preceded in death by his wife, LeeAnn; a son, Michael D. Thornton, Jr.; and brothers, Bill and Tim Thornton.

Mike is survived by a daughter, Michele A. (Nicholas) Hartley; a son, Shawn P. (Brandy) Thornton; seven grandchildren, Kirstie, Darian and Kayla Hartley, Mackenzie and Shawn Thornton, Christopher Thornton and Patrick Romeo; brothers, Jeff Thornton and Larry Thornton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Monday, March 29, in St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 W. Mishawaka, Ave., Mishawaka, with Rev. Jacob Meyer officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.

Visitation will be from 2 – 5 pm on Sunday in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, and from 9:30 – 10:30 am Monday in church.

Memorials are suggested to American Legion Post 161.
