Robert “Bob†L. Sloan, 59, of Mishawaka, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013.
Bob was born January 13, 1954 in Mishawaka; the community where he spent his entire life. He graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1973.
Bob married Cheryl L. Newcomer on November 5, 1983.
Bob’s surviving family includes his wife of nearly 30 years, Cheryl Sloan; his father, Donald Richard “Dick†Sloan of South Bend; two sisters, Sheila (David) Marvel of Florida and Marsha (John) Poulos of Maryland; a brother, Doug (Kathy) Sloan of Indianapolis; Cheryl’s parents, Donald and Dolores Newcomer of Osceola; Cheryl’s sister, Gina (Charles) Mitchell of Osceola; several nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn (Key) Sloan, in 2012.
Bob was employed by Dodge Manufacturing / RMG Foundry for 32 years until they closed in 2006. In recent years he had worked at ATI Casting Service in LaPorte.
Bob was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church in Mishawaka where he served as a Deacon and a Trustee. Bob and Cheryl participated in Leader Dogs for the Blind. They raised seven puppies, six of whom graduated and became Leader Dogs. Bob enjoyed boating and scuba diving but his true hobby and passion was helping others.
Services honoring Bob’s life will be held Wednesday at 10:30 am in First Presbyterian Church, 401 Lincolnway East, Mishawaka, with Rev. Mary Ann Banning and Rev. Jan VanLear officiating.
Friends may spend time with Bob’s family Tuesday from 5 - 8 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka.
Memorials are suggested to Leader Dogs for the Blind or Pet Refuge. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
