Shirley M. Wachs, 73, of Granger, passed away Saturday, July 2, 2016 in Hospice House, South Bend, following a brief illness.
Shirley was born May 3, 1943 in Mishawaka, a daughter of the late Gilbert and Elvira (Hallaert) Bunch. She grew up in Mishawaka and was a 1961 graduate of Mishawaka High School.
On November 21, 1970 in St. Bavo Catholic Church, Mishawaka, Shirley married George E. Wachs. The couple lived in Mishawaka and Granger.
Shirley’s employment was in clerical work at the University of Notre Dame, Neff Engineering, Indiana Eye Institute and Uniroyal. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger, Michiana Mustang Club, Firesiders Camping Club, the former Knights of Columbus #1878 Women’s Auxiliary and the Mishawaka Alumni Association. Shirley has been an active part of planning MHS Class of 1961 reunions. She enjoyed fishing, camping and collecting dolls and miniatures.
Shirley’s surviving family includes her husband, George; a half-sister, Cathleen Snavely; and George’s family to whom she was very close.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, July 7, at 10:30 am in St. Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger, with Monsignor William Schooler officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Friends may spend time with Shirley’s family Wednesday, July 6, from 3 - 7 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, where a prayer service will be at 7 pm. Visitation is also Thursday from 9:30 - 10:30 am in the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Center for Hospice Care or the USO. Assistance with memorials is available through the funeral home.
