Sister Evelyn Marie Czaplewski (formerly Sister Bernella) was called to her eternal reward at 2;05 AM on Monday, April 11, 2016. Sister Evelyn Marie died peacefully at Our Lady of Angels Convent in Mishawaka, IN, in the presence of her Sisters. Evelyn was the oldest child born to Bernard and Elizabeth (Stobbe) Czaplewski in Omaha, NE on August 20, 1920. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Pauline and Gertrude Rose, and her brother, Bernard. She entered the convent on August 15, 1938 and received the habit on August 12, 1939. She professed perpetual vows on August 12, 1946. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from St. Francis College in 1950 and a Master of Arts degree in Educational Administration from the University of Notre Dame in 1970.
Sister Evelyn Marie was a dedicated educator for fifty-two years teaching at all levels and in administration. She enjoyed her students regardless of the level she was assigned to teach. Even though she loved the content of her teaching, forming a relationship with each student was most important. Dear to her heart were her years spent at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne. She taught chemistry and physics from 1974-1980 and was the Registrar from 1980-1993. She also taught at Bishop Luers High School and Huntington Catholic.
She was assigned to St. Francis Convent in 1993 where she served as a receptionist at the front door and as house vicar. In 2003 she retired to Our Lady of Angels Convent where she continued to form relationships, especially with those entrusted with her care. Whether teaching or in the later years of her life, she was kind, gentle and gracious. She always maintained her delightful sense of humor.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 12 from 6:30-8:00 PM. The Eucharistic funeral liturgy for Sister Evelyn Marie will be on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 11:00 AM at St. Francis Convent Chapel. Burial will follow in the convent cemetery.
Arrangements are under the care of Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, Mishawaka.
