Susann I. (Standiford) Smith

Susann “Sue” I. Smith of Salt Springs, Florida, formerly of Edwardsburg, MI, passed away and was received into the presence of her Savior on June 21, 2023. She was surrounded with her family and friends at the home of dear friends and then at her brother’s home in South Bend. While there, she was cared for by her loving husband, Gary, her cousin Kae Swartz and her sister-in-law. Susann was born August 9, 1953, in Niles, Michigan to the late George Collins and Mary Louise (Spenner) Standiford. Susann met her future husband, Gary Smith at the Edwardsburg roller skating rink, and they were married on April 15, 1972.

Surviving is her husband of 51 years, Gary Smith of Salt Springs, Florida and their children Karl (Joanie) Smith and Karol Krueger. Surviving as well are her grandchildren Josef Krueger, Haley Smith, Chaya Goins, Bella Luz Smith and Tenor Smith, along with her great granddaughter Emris and another great grandchild due this year. Sue is also survived by her siblings Michael (Betty) Standiford, Barbara (Richard) Rodman, and Clifford (Allison) Standiford, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Wells and Cruz Family Funeral Home (formerly Goethals and Wells) of Mishawaka has been entrusted with her care.

Sue's faith in Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior, was the cornerstone of her life, shaping her character and guiding her actions. She dedicated her God-given talent for singing to enriching the spiritual experience of others, singing in the church choir at Salt Springs Christian Church. Additionally, she devoted her time to teaching Sunday school, nurturing young hearts and showing God’s love to all of the children she held dear. Later in life, Sue found a spiritual home at First Baptist Church of Salt Springs, where she continued to serve the Lord faithfully.

Sue will be remembered as a vibrant soul who touched the lives of everyone she met. Her magnetic personality drew people to her effortlessly, and her warm, likable nature left footprints on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. A true adventurer at heart, Sue and her husband Gary embarked on numerous motorcycle journeys across the country, exploring and embracing the beauty of nature. Among her passions, mountain biking held a special place in Sue's heart, allowing her to spend time in the great outdoors in Upper Michigan, where she found peace and contentment. Sue was also blessed with a remarkable gift for storytelling and her family was able to capture some of the stories of her life on video to share and remember for years to come. A natural born entertainer, Sue enjoyed making balloon animals and painting the faces of children and adults alike at local carnivals and festivals.

Sue embodied the qualities of joy, patience, and the love of Christ. She approached every aspect of her life with enthusiasm and brightened the lives of those around her. Whether it was mentoring other women or simply offering a listening ear, she left an impact on countless lives, spreading kindness and encouragement wherever she went.
