Theodore “Ted” H. Derksen, 77, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2015 in Memorial Hospital, South Bend.

Ted was born March 12, 1938 in Mishawaka, a son of the late John and Louise (Newhouse) Derksen. He grew up and spent most of his life in Madison Township. He was a graduate of Madison Township High School.

Ted married Mary Ellen Baranowski on May 2, 1959 in St. Monica Catholic Church, Mishawaka. She preceded him in death on April 28, 2014 after nearly 55 years of marriage.

Ted was a farmer, owning and operating his family farm. He loved his work and was a true farmer at heart. Ted was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Mishawaka. He enjoyed 4-H Fairs and tractor pulls.

Ted’s life was about helping others. He was a thoughtful, humble man who was a loyal friend to many. He was a man of faith and a servant of Christ.

Ted’s family was an important part of his life and he deeply loved his grandchildren. He is particularly remembered for his devoted care of his wife Mary.

Ted’s surviving family includes his three children, Richard (Joanna) Derksen of Bethesda, Maryland, Ken (Pam) Derksen of South Bend and Karen (Bill) Weber of Mishawaka; a brother, John Derksen, Jr. of Wakarusa; six grandchildren, John, Cassandra, Theo, Heather, Matthew and Liana; and one great grandson, Wyett.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 10, at 10:30 am in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 4508 Vistula Road, Mishawaka, with Rev. John Eze officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka.

Friends may spend time with Ted’s family on Monday, November 9, from 4 - 7 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, and also on Tuesday from 9:30 - 10:30 am in church.

Ted’s family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Madison Township Fire Department. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home.
