William A. Schwartz, 75, of Granger, passed away at home on Monday, March 28, 2022.
Bill was born October 13, 1946 in South Bend to the late Ralph and Annette (Hendrix) Schwartz. He grew up in South Bend and was a proud graduate of John Adams High School, Class of 1965. He lived in the Michiana area his entire life.
Bill was a Police Officer for the City of Mishawaka for 32 years. During those years he had many positions: accident car, detective, captain of the traffic division and instructor for traffic school were some of his favorites. He was also featured on the program On the Case with Paula Zahn. If you are interested you can see him in the episode Deadly Hymn. He would like that.
Bill married Karen (Young) Moore on April 11, 1986 and she survives after more than 35 years of devoted marriage. Also surviving is his son, Jeff (Maggie) Schwartz and their family. Bill is also survived by his sisters and brothers-in law, Jan (Rob) Zelasko, Shirley Jones, Jim (Rose) Smolka and Verna Kline. Also left to cherish his memory are many nieces and nephews including Kara (Jimmy) Bell and children Jessie and Kassidy, Nico (Katherine) Squadroni and children Leo and Gia, John (Jackie) Speake and Jim (Kim) Speake.
Bill loved being a police officer, fishing at Muskie Bay in Canada, his wife, family and friends, fishing the local lakes, anything in nature, fishing for blue gills, making and repairing fishing rods, any dog, fishing for bass, tinkering and figuring out ways to fix things, and of course, fishing.
Bill dealt with many health issues over the last 12 years and showed such strength to overcome so many obstacles. Thank you to those who helped his fight especially Dr. Bilal Ansari and Beth Mondschein and the staff at Michiana Hematology Oncology and Dr. Matthew Kościeliski and Erin Rissler of Pulmonary & Critical Care Associates.
Special thanks to Bill’s caregiver, Boas and the staff at Always Best Care for all the help and support these last few months. Also, the Center for Hospice Care who helped navigate this last part of our journey.
Inspired by his friend, Bob Pawlowski, Bill generously donated his body to the Anatomical Education Program at Indiana University School of Medicine.
A Memorial Service to honor Bill’s life will be held at 3 pm on Saturday, April 9, at Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka.
Visitation will be from 1 pm to 3 pm on Saturday.
